Subcortical

Audiovisual piece (2:30 min) screened in RCR Programa Obert (Materia Bosque IV) 2022 and in the Festival Arbola 2023.

Subcortical refers to the botanical term that looks under the bark of trees, but also to the medical term that looks under the cortex of the brain, that looks at the structures where emotions, instincts or dreams are regulated. This film takes us to a place that lies beneath the surface, on a journey that reveals the fractality of plant life.

Subcortical is born from a forest scanned using LiDAR techniques and tree bark scanned with photogrammetry. Both techniques take us to a universe of data where we can have the points, which reference the reality in the digital three-dimensional space, as a medium on which to build different views and narratives, as it allows us to move in and among the trees without the limitations of the physical world.

The images are accompanied by a soundtrack, created ad hoc by the author while visualizing the piece, through a minimalist use of digital synthesizers, which emphasizes the journey into the vegetable underworld.
